How to write hooks that stop the scroll (with templates)

What a hook actually is

A hook isn't a clever sentence. It's an open loop— a gap the reader needs closed. The job of the first line is not to explain; it's to make the second line irresistible. If your opener could be the last sentence of the post, it's not a hook.

• Contrarian. "Posting more is killing your reach." Challenge the common belief.
• Specific number. "I tried this for 30 days. Here's what 11 of them taught me."
• Curiosity gap. "The one setting that doubled my saves — and nobody mentions it."
• Callout. "If you're under 10k followers, read this before you post again."
• Mistake / fear. "5 things quietly making your content look amateur."
• Result-first. "From 0 to 10k in 90 days. The boring system that did it."

Mistakes that kill hooks

• The warm-up. Deleting your first sentence usually makes the hook stronger. Start at the point.
• Vague stakes. "Some thoughts on growth" promises nothing. Promise a payoff.
• Trying to be clever. Clarity beats wit. The reader should instantly know what they'll get.
• Sounding like a brand. "In today's fast-paced digital landscape…" — instant scroll. Write like a person.
